September 9, 2002

The meeting opened with the Call to Order, the Recognition of Visitors and Approval of the Agenda. The Good News Recognition followed with Dr. Jan Voss recognizing two USD 470 teachers who recently received awards.

Good News Recognition

Richard Potterton, eighth grade American history teacher, received the V.F.W. Third District Teacher of the Year award. (Read more about Potterton's award here.) Pam Barbour, fifth grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary, was awarded the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year award for Arkansas City. (Read more about Barbour's award here.)

BOE President Daren Reese said a few kind words about Richard, who was one of his teachers when he was in middle school and who had a positive influence on him.

Action Items

I. Authorization to sell surplus wrestling mats. This item passed.

 

II. Authorize professional development school at IXL (partnership with Southwestern College) passed. One intern will be placed at IXL for a two-year pre-service term. This intern also will practice teach at IXL.

Next, the board discussed the draft of the BOE/district goals. Dr. Perry L. Perkins presented the draft that includes five goals along with strategies, including increasing student achievement and a three to five year strategic plan.

Member Dr. Nick Rogers said that he thought Dr. Perkins did a good job writing the goals and that he was very comfortable with them. Other members agreed.

Member Joelyn Squires pointed out some minor changes to the wording, and the board decided to take action on the goals at the next meeting.

Executive Session

After 35 minutes in Executive Session, the board voted 7-0 to approve the proposed tentative master agreement as presented.
