MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents:

Last Monday, as I drove into the high school parking lot I noticed our campus had made a significant change in its looks.  Light poles were everywhere.  The poles were marking the new tennis courts, softball complex and football stadium.   I thought to myself, I hope our students realize how fortunate they are to have a community that supports them and wants to provide a nice facility for them.

Sometime around May 26, our school will be shut down.  Our summer offices will be relocated over to the sixth grade center in order to accommodate work crews as they begin updating the hvac systems throughout this facility.   We may be at the sixth grade center for much of the summer.  We will still be open and providing the summer support services needed but from the new site, including summer school, sending transcripts to colleges and universities, enrolling new students and building student schedules.

The tight statewide budget is causing us to take a hard look at class enrollments.  Some elective classes have been cut due to small enrollment.  To alleviate this, we have worked closely with Cowley College and are happy to announce that next year, we will offer more dual credit courses for our juniors and seniors than ever.  Students can take during the school day College Composition I and II, College Algebra, Elementary Statistics, Calculus, Sociology, Psychology, or public speaking along with many elective classes and receive both college and high school credit.

With four weeks left in this school year, I am pleased with the effort the majority of our students have made this year.  Many graduating seniors have received significant scholarships.  Our athletic teams have all improved and our activities have performed at a high rate as well.  We will continue to have high expectations and push to be the best in all we do.

Kindest regards,

David Zumwalt

PINK ZONE

Arkansas City High School and Winfield High School put all the rivalry aside for one night to raise money for cancer research with the First Annual Cowley County Clash for Cancer held February 19. Student Council members from each school, as well as sponsors, worked together to raise $6,l67.91 as part of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Pink Zone breast cancer initiative. All the money raised was donated directly to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fundâ.

The game, the first of its kind in Ark City, began as a service project for the ACHS Student Council who wanted to bring awareness and support to a cause that is personal to a great number of our students. By selling pink t-shirts and pink bracelets, both at ACHS and WHS, we were able to exceed expectations. Miss Kansas USA 2010 Bethany Gerber, a Winfield native, was also in attendance and spoke about the importance of raising awareness for cancer research and her pride in both schools for their involvement in this initiative.

The WBCA Pink Zoneâ is a nationwide initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women’s basketball, on campuses, and in communities. “Pink” basketball games are played all over the United States during a week-long period at colleges and high schools alike. Participants support the cause by wearing pink during the games.
Arkansas City High School Student Council sponsors are Jocelyn Corley, Jennifer Collins, and LK Giger.

ACHS BEGINS S.A.S.S. (Smart Approaches to Social Safety) PROGRAM

One in four girls will be raped or sexually assaulted just in their four years of college, according to research (Fischer, 2000). How confident are you that your teenage daughter can identify the danger signs where sexual trauma is likely to occurThe crisis of acquaintance rape has reached such epidemic proportions that it demands to be brought to the attention of the people who care the most about our nation’s high school and college age girls—parents and teachers. ACHS is pleased to take a leadership role in the state—and nation—to reverse this tragic trend by partnering with Dean Hall, local therapist, author, activist and educator (Dean taught in KS public schools for 20 years—16 of which were right here at USD 470) to implement a new pilot program called S.A.S.S. (Smart Approaches to Social Safety).

S.A.S.S. was born out of the tragic events that transpired in our community in January of ’07.  Jodi Sanderholm was one of Dean’s former students.  Her loss was the impetus moving Dean to write A Girl’s Guide to Psychos, Players, Punks and Pervs: How to Become the Ultimate Guy Detector and dedicating his life’s work to sexual assault prevention.

S.A.S.S. is a systematic plan based on researched “best practices” for acquaintance rape education and social safety strategies.  Participants  received a free copy of Psychos, Players, Punks and Pervs, membership to the interactive website, involvement in short, teacher-led discussions reinforcing social safety strategies, and an opportunity to have a face-to-face question and answer session/book signing with author and S.A.S.S. founder, C. Dean Hall.

Next year's musical is BACK TO THE 80's

This is a look back at high school during the 80's with chart-topping songs in that era.  Rubic Cubes to Madonna - everything about the 80's is found in this musical.  We are looking to borrow 80's clothes, especially letter jackets and sweaters.  So dig into your closet and dust off those clothes you have been saving from your high school days.  Hope to see you next year.
