The Board of Education approved the waiving of all textbook fees for the 2007-08 school year.
The recommendation came from the USD 470 business office and was based upon several factors including: 2007-08 fiscal projections, equity issues and the benefit to parent and guardian patrons.
The USD 470 business office and Board hope this is something they can continue but for now, the waiving of textbook fees applies only to this school year.
At the regular Board meeting Monday night, Mr. David Stinemetze requested Board permission to sponsor a high school trip in the summer of 2008.
Permission was granted and Stinemetze along with Kim Hager will sponsor the educational tour through Italy and Greece.
ÒA trip of this nature,Ó he said Òwill offer students an excellent learning experience.Ó
The 13-day travel experience will be arranged through EF Tours. The tour will also include a 3-day cruise through the Greek Islands of the Aegean Sea.
So far 16 students have announced their intent to participate, 14 have actually signed up and many adults have signed up as well. Students have through the end of September to enroll.
ÒWe live in a global world now,Ó Dr. Ron. Ballard said. ÒThis type of experience would prove valuable for our kids.Ó
Ballard also said Stinemetze is very well organized and keeps everyone together.
ÒMr. Stinemetze and his colleagues have always provided professional, constant supervision for USD 470 students on such trips,Ó he said.
The Board also declared the trip a high school activity that allows district and school policies to be in effect and enforceable, encouraging proper behavior among students.
