School board approves new evaluation process for administrators

At its regular meeting Monday, the USD 470 Board of Education voted to approve a new performance-based evaluation for building administrators.

ÒThe job description, adopted by the board last month, serves as the base for the evaluation instrument,Ó Dr. Ron Ballard, superintendent, said. ÒThis should prove to be much more effective in establishing guidelines for our principals and help them to consistently improve.Ó

A committee that includes building administrators helped to form the evaluation tool that gives principals a numeric rating for effectiveness and a priority level of high, medium or low.

ÒObviously we think all of the areas on the form are of high priority,Ó Ballard said. ÒBut for someone who consistently scores high in a particular area, eventually that area will become less of a priority and instead, weÕll focus more of our attention on something that person may need to improve on.Ó

Ballard said he hopes to implement the evaluation process as early as next week. Principals are formally evaluated annually.
