Schools to make up day at end of year

Arkansas City Public Schools will make up for lost student attendance days, due to snow and ice, at the end of the year. Originally, the last day of school was to be May 22, 2008. Now, due to a winter full of school closings, the final day of classes will be May 23.

ÒSince we missed four instructional days (one has been made up through our P/T conference adjustment), we are concerned about any further weather or emergency matters that may arise,Ó Dr. Ron Ballard, superintendent said.  ÒWe could, possibly, reach the final day without such a change, however, this allows some extra hours just in case.Ó

Kansas state statue requires that students attend school at least 1,116 hours each school year. The local BOE adopts this as policy at the beginning of each school year.

ÒWe appreciate everyoneÕs understanding and cooperation during this change,Ó Ballard said. ÒWe hope that by erring on the side of caution we can prevent any last minute issues from occurring.Ó
