Students earn top honors at city spelling bee

Two USD 470 students earned top honors in the Arkansas City spelling bee at Arkansas City Middle School on Feb. 5. The top four spellers will go on to compete in the Cowley County spelling bee at ACMS Feb. 19, at 9:30 a.m.
First place went to Elizabeth Cook, seventh grader at Ark City Christian Academy; second place to Amanda Westenfeld, seventh grader at ACMS; third place to Brianee Ford, seventh grader at ACMS; and fourth place to John Seitz, fourth grader at Sacred Heart.
Fifteen of the 18 contestants who made it to the final round of competition are 470 students. Contestants went 20 rounds, and the winning word was subtle.
The following students made it to the final round of competition: Michael Anthony, sixth grade, ACMS; Tyler Reichle, eighth grade, ACMS; Ellen Walker, third grade, Sacred Heart; Amanda Westenfeld, seventh grade, ACMS; Hali McCord, eighth grade, ACMS; John Rohr, third grade, Roosevelt; Isaac Clark, fourth grade, Frances Willard; Harlee Mussleman, fifth grade, Frances Willard; Elizabeth Cook, seventh, Ark City Christian Academy; Chad Gelino, eighth grade, ACMS, Mitchell Myers, third grade, Jefferson; Courtney Jordan, sixth grade, ACMS; John Seitz, fourth grade, Sacred Heart; Brianne Ford, seventh grade, ACMS; Emma Schrag, fourth grade, Roosevelt; Drew Bennett, fifth grade, Roosevelt; Tear Morris, sixth grade, ACMS; and Tanner Gramm, fifth grade, Jefferson.
